Dr. Piet Van Eeuwijk

Piet van Eeuwijk is a social anthropologist (Dr. Phil. I, University of Basel; 1997) and historian (Lic. Phil. I, University of Basel; 1985) and holds a postgraduate degree in developing countries/development policy studies (Dipl. NADEL, ETH Zurich; 1988). Post-doctoral studies were completed at the ‘Australian Centre for International and Tropical Health and Nutrition (ACITHN)’, University of Queensland, Brisbane (Australia; 1998), and at the ’International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS)’, University of Leiden (The Netherlands; 2003).
His current scientific specialization is in the field of medical anthropology, anthropology of ageing, urban anthropology, applied anthropology and political ecology. He is engaged as senior lecturer and senior researcher in teaching and research on medical anthropology/anthropology of ageing, political ecology/sustainable development and/or Southeast-Asia/East Africa at the Institute of Social Anthropology, University of Basel; the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH), University of Basel; the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology, University of Zurich; the Institute of Social Anthropology, University of Bern; and the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology, Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg i.Br. Moreover, he teaches regularly anthropological themes at various Indonesian universities.
He was head of research projects in Indonesia (2000-2004; University of Basel) and in Tanzania (2008-2011; University of Basel) on ageing, health and care; corresponding follow-up research activities continue to this day. Furthermore, Piet van Eeuwijk as medical anthropologist and medical historian has coordinated several research projects such as the history of Swiss mission hospitals in sub-Saharan Africa (Ghana, Tanzania, and South Africa; 2008-2011; University of Basel) and ageing, agency and health in Tanzania (2012-2014; University of Basel), and is research staff/co-investigator in a research study on sustainable development of Christian actors in Indonesia (2014-2017; University of Bern) and on preventive chemotherapy of helminths and community-directed interventions in the Mekong River area (2009-2014; Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, University of Basel).
Piet van Eeuwijk is member of the ‘Teaching Commission’ of the ‘Master’s Degree in Sustainable Development’ (MSD) of the University of Basel. He is also co-founder, former president and member of ‘Medical Anthropology Switzerland‘ (MAS), a commission of the ‘Swiss Ethnological Society’ (SEG), and also committee member of the ‚Medical Anthropology Network‘ of the ‚European Association of Social Anthropologists‘ (EASA).
Moreover, he is yet engaged in development cooperation of private organizations as consultant (and former project officer at Basel Mission/mission21) in particular in the health, education/training and agriculture/fishery sector, and acts as expert in developing policy and project course management in national commissions of projects and programmes of Bread for All.
